Why this environment matters

A court evidence workstation may need to open files whose origin is hostile or disputed. The challenge is to let an authorised person inspect a working copy while preserving the original and keeping the viewer away from unrelated case material. This concept treats evidence rendering as a disposable, tightly scoped task.

The security challenge

An intake process would record an exhibit identifier and the integrity value of the preserved original before creating a review copy. A compatible viewer capsule would receive that copy and a constrained output surface, not general credentials for the evidence repository. Extracted text, thumbnails and converted files would be recorded as derivatives, with their relationship to the original retained.

How the capsule model could help

NØNOS could provide a candidate boundary around complex document, image or media parsers. Each review session would be authorised for the exhibits required for that task. Clipboard access, printing and export would be deliberate capabilities instead of incidental consequences of running a familiar desktop application. Temporary execution can reduce cross-case residue, but an evidentiary workflow needs lasting records of authorised access and generated derivatives. The prototype would send those records to a separately controlled store before discarding session state. It would not describe a restart as deletion of every copy held by printers, remote systems or captured displays. A reviewer also needs to distinguish original content from the viewer’s interpretation. A successful integrity check does not prove that a video is authentic or that a document’s assertions are true. Those questions remain with the relevant forensic and legal process.

Separate address spaces and capability checks can limit cross-process reach. They cannot stop harmful use of legitimate permissions, prove AI decisions correct or substitute for domain-specific safety controls.

Deployment requirements

The proposal makes no claim about admissibility, forensic certification or legal compliance. Repository design, authorised retention, disclosure rules and review procedures must be established by the organisation responsible for the evidence. Evaluation requirements: Open a deliberately malformed test file and verify that the viewer cannot reach an unrelated case or an external endpoint. Produce a redacted derivative and check that its identifier, parent exhibit and export action remain distinguishable. End a session and confirm that its temporary access is gone while the required review history remains available.

Current public-beta limitations, hardware support and application availability must be assessed before any pilot. Neither this use case nor an industry source establishes NONOS certification or a current customer deployment.
