Why this environment matters

The trust boundary for citizen service kiosks matters because the system provides public access to forms, payments, identity checks and government information in unattended locations. The operational threat is specific: physical tampering or browser compromise can expose personal data, capture credentials or convert the kiosk into a network foothold. A NØNOS-based design could reduce ambient authority and make the system easier to reset, inspect and attest.

The security challenge

Public-sector systems hold authoritative records and powers that affect identity, liberty, property, emergency response and national security. Endpoint compromise can therefore create consequences far beyond data loss. In citizen service kiosks, the decisive risk is that physical tampering or browser compromise can expose personal data, capture credentials or convert the kiosk into a network foothold. Even strong perimeter controls may not help once authorised software, a vendor tool or a valid user session has been compromised. Internal permission boundaries must remain enforceable after initial access.

How the capsule model could help

For this system, NØNOS could use locked, resettable sessions with whitelisted capsules, restricted peripherals and automatic restoration after every transaction. The design would combine signed application allow-lists, purpose-bound data access, attestation for privileged actions and controlled removable media. The intended result would be a set of small trust boundaries instead of one large operating environment where every service inherits broad ambient access.

Separate address spaces and capability checks can limit cross-process reach. They cannot stop harmful use of legitimate permissions, prove AI decisions correct or substitute for domain-specific safety controls.

Deployment requirements

Government deployment would require formal accreditation, identity and records integration, accessibility testing, procurement assurance and controls appropriate to the information classification and public function.

Current public-beta limitations, hardware support and application availability must be assessed before any pilot. Neither this use case nor an industry source establishes NONOS certification or a current customer deployment.
