Three distinct kinds of number
1. Published industry market estimates
Each use case carries an existing third-party industry benchmark. Some include hardware, software and services; some cover an adjacent category. A US-only figure is kept as US-only, never relabelled global. These are category context, not an operating-system TAM.
2. Modelled global device ranges
For ten cases, a published population anchors the model and explicit assumptions narrow or translate it into candidate endpoints. For the other 190 cases, a bottom-up range assumes a global number of equipped sites or assets and endpoints per site. Those assumptions are hypothetical; the accompanying market source supplies context, not a device census.
3. Illustrative annual licensing scenarios
Multiplying modelled endpoints by an assumed annual per-endpoint price gives an arithmetic full-coverage scenario. It is not expected revenue, announced pricing, market research on willingness to pay or an attainable market forecast.
Do not add the 200 cases together
A single workstation can support research, administration, coding and signing. A gateway can serve several use cases. Device categories also overlap: POS terminals and smart meters are subsets of connected IoT. Build a deduplicated set of physical endpoints before estimating a portfolio total.
Keep units and periods intact
Installed devices, annual shipments, subscriptions, employees, students and spending are different measures. New shipments include replacements; subscriptions are not unique physical devices. A forecast is labelled as a forecast. Older source years remain visible.
Deployment and revenue are further filters
Candidate devices are not proven compatible hardware. Application availability, drivers, CPU architecture, real-time constraints, regulation, customer procurement and willingness to migrate narrow the opportunity. Acquisition cost, support costs, channels, churn and discounts further affect economics.
