If trust is misplaced, malware or recipe manipulation can reduce yield, introduce subtle defects or expose highly valuable process knowledge. NØNOS could narrow the trusted computing base and give each function only the resources required for its defined job.
The security challenge
The practical concern is that malware or recipe manipulation can reduce yield, introduce subtle defects or expose highly valuable process knowledge. Industrial software turns files, sensor readings and network messages into machinery movement, production settings and safety-relevant decisions. Containment has to extend to devices and actuators. The attack surface may include remote support, software updates, removable media, third-party libraries, public input or misused operator credentials. The security design therefore needs containment as well as prevention.
How the capsule model could help
The proposed deployment pattern is to provide equipment-specific signed tools, isolated recipe handling and restricted vendor support sessions with attested access. NØNOS would use driver and motion isolation and signed production recipes as the trust foundation, then apply restricted actuator access and attested maintenance sessions around higher-risk functions. Logs or proofs could record which approved capsule performed a privileged action without retaining unnecessary user data.
Deployment requirements
Production deployment must maintain independent emergency stops, safety PLCs, certified interlocks and validated motion or process limits. NØNOS could reduce software trust but should not collapse independent safety layers.
Current public-beta limitations, hardware support and application availability must be assessed before any pilot. Neither this use case nor an industry source establishes NONOS certification or a current customer deployment.
