Why this environment matters

Modern machine vision quality inspection stations depend on complex software, external data and remote administration. Here, the system uses cameras and models to accept or reject manufactured products. If trust is misplaced, model tampering or altered thresholds can allow defects through or create costly false rejects. NØNOS could narrow the trusted computing base and give each function only the resources required for its defined job.

The security challenge

Industrial software turns files, sensor readings and network messages into machinery movement, production settings and safety-relevant decisions. Containment has to extend to devices and actuators. The aim is to prevent that single failure from automatically gaining the keys, devices, records and network paths of the whole platform.

How the capsule model could help

A candidate NØNOS architecture would isolate image capture, model execution, threshold policy and result export, signing both model and inspection recipe. The design would prioritise attested maintenance sessions and known-good recovery, supported by driver and motion isolation and signed production recipes. Each capsule would carry a declared policy for files, networks, devices and secrets, and unknown or altered software would not receive the same authority as an approved component.

Separate address spaces and capability checks can limit cross-process reach. They cannot stop harmful use of legitimate permissions, prove AI decisions correct or substitute for domain-specific safety controls.

Deployment requirements

Production deployment must maintain independent emergency stops, safety PLCs, certified interlocks and validated motion or process limits. NØNOS could reduce software trust but should not collapse independent safety layers.

Current public-beta limitations, hardware support and application availability must be assessed before any pilot. Neither this use case nor an industry source establishes NONOS certification or a current customer deployment.
