Why this environment matters

Modern car-sharing access controllers depend on complex software, external data and remote administration. Here, the system links bookings, temporary credentials, vehicle locks and trip telemetry for shared fleets. If trust is misplaced, an account or backend compromise could unlock many vehicles, create fraudulent trips or expose customer travel histories. NØNOS could narrow the trusted computing base and give each function only the resources required for its defined job.

The security challenge

The practical concern is that an account or backend compromise could unlock many vehicles, create fraudulent trips or expose customer travel histories. Connected vehicles combine public-facing radios, third-party content, diagnostics and hardware that can affect motion. Security therefore has to control both information flow and authority over physical functions. The attack surface may include remote support, software updates, removable media, third-party libraries, public input or misused operator credentials. The security design therefore needs containment as well as prevention.

How the capsule model could help

The proposed deployment pattern is to limit each booking capsule to a specific vehicle, time window and action set, with attestation before high-risk remote commands. NØNOS would use signed capsule updates and hardware capability isolation as the trust foundation, then apply verified boot and attestation and minimal persistent state around higher-risk functions. Logs or proofs could record which approved capsule performed a privileged action without retaining unnecessary user data.

Separate address spaces and capability checks can limit cross-process reach. They cannot stop harmful use of legitimate permissions, prove AI decisions correct or substitute for domain-specific safety controls.

Deployment requirements

Any in-vehicle deployment would require OEM integration, hardware-specific drivers, deterministic timing analysis, functional-safety assessment and validation against the vehicle's existing safety architecture.

Current public-beta limitations, hardware support and application availability must be assessed before any pilot. Neither this use case nor an industry source establishes NONOS certification or a current customer deployment.
