Commercial Truck Electronic Logging Devices

A deployment concept for trucking fleets, regulators, ELD vendors and compliance managers.

Why this environment matters

Security for commercial truck electronic logging devices starts with the system's role: it records driver hours, vehicle movement and inspection information for regulatory compliance. A key concern is that tampering can conceal fatigue violations, falsify duty status or leak sensitive route and driver information. NØNOS offers a potential architecture based on signed capsules, explicit capabilities and strong isolation.

The security challenge

The threat model should assume that one component will eventually fail or be exploited. In this case, tampering can conceal fatigue violations, falsify duty status or leak sensitive route and driver information. Connected vehicles combine public-facing radios, third-party content, diagnostics and hardware that can affect motion. Security therefore has to control both information flow and authority over physical functions. The aim is to prevent that single failure from automatically gaining the keys, devices, records and network paths of the whole platform.

How the capsule model could help

A candidate NØNOS architecture would isolate compliance logging from entertainment and general telematics, sign record-producing code and restrict who may alter stored events. The design would prioritise a memory-safe Rust core and signed capsule updates, supported by hardware capability isolation and verified boot and attestation. Each capsule would carry a declared policy for files, networks, devices and secrets, and unknown or altered software would not receive the same authority as an approved component.

Separate address spaces and capability checks can limit cross-process reach. They cannot stop harmful use of legitimate permissions, prove AI decisions correct or substitute for domain-specific safety controls.

Deployment requirements

Any in-vehicle deployment would require OEM integration, hardware-specific drivers, deterministic timing analysis, functional-safety assessment and validation against the vehicle's existing safety architecture.

Current public-beta limitations, hardware support and application availability must be assessed before any pilot. Neither this use case nor an industry source establishes NONOS certification or a current customer deployment.

Who could buy or integrate it?

  • ELD vendors integrating logging devices and applications
  • Trucking fleets purchasing compliance systems
  • Truck manufacturers offering integrated logging platforms

Device calculation

Hypothetical global planning range, 2025 scenario: assume 5,000,000–15,000,000 trucks subject to digital duty-hour logging across equipped jurisdictions × 1–1 candidate OS endpoints per site/asset = 5,000,000–15,000,000 endpoints. Counting unit: one dedicated logging computer; excludes purely analog tachographs. Site and asset counts, and devices per site, are planning assumptions. The installed base has not been measured. Coverage is limited to the defined equipped subset; includes all candidate endpoints within that assumed subset. Hardware eligibility, certification, adoption and achievable NØNOS share are unverified; overlaps other cases.

How to interpret the figures

Adjacent or broader commercial market benchmark; not the NØNOS OS market, licensable-device count or revenue forecast.

Modelled candidate endpoints multiplied by an assumed annual USD price per endpoint. Pricing is a planning assumption, not a vendor quote. This illustrates the full scenario range, not revenue or total addressable market. It excludes adoption timing, procurement, certification, support costs, channel economics and achievable market share. Use cases can overlap, so their totals do not represent unique devices.
