Home Solar and Battery Gateways

A deployment concept for solar installers, inverter vendors, virtual power plants, utilities and homeowners.

Proposed deployment · Compatibility assessment required
Smart Home and Consumer Devices

Why this environment matters

Security for home solar and battery gateways starts with the system's role: it coordinates rooftop solar, home batteries, grid export and household energy monitoring. A key concern is that compromised dispatch can expose consumption data, disable backup power or participate in coordinated grid instability. NØNOS offers a potential architecture based on signed capsules, explicit capabilities and strong isolation.

The security challenge

The threat model should assume that one component will eventually fail or be exploited. In this case, compromised dispatch can expose consumption data, disable backup power or participate in coordinated grid instability. Consumer devices are exposed for years, share private household networks and often combine cloud services with cameras, microphones, motors, heaters or water valves. The aim is to prevent that single failure from automatically gaining the keys, devices, records and network paths of the whole platform.

How the capsule model could help

A candidate NØNOS architecture would separate inverter control, market or utility commands, household analytics and vendor support with asset-specific capabilities. The design would prioritise automatic clean-session reset and signed device firmware, supported by minimal household data retention and per-device capabilities. Each capsule would carry a declared policy for files, networks, devices and secrets, and unknown or altered software would not receive the same authority as an approved component.

Separate address spaces and capability checks can limit cross-process reach. They cannot stop harmful use of legitimate permissions, prove AI decisions correct or substitute for domain-specific safety controls.

Deployment requirements

Manufacturers would need to preserve offline operation, physical safety interlocks, accessible recovery and long-term update support. A secure OS cannot compensate for unsafe hardware, weak cloud accounts or poor product support.

Current public-beta limitations, hardware support and application availability must be assessed before any pilot. Neither this use case nor an industry source establishes NONOS certification or a current customer deployment.

Who could buy or integrate it?

  • Home-energy gateway OEMs choosing application-control software
  • Solar and storage platform vendors integrating utility dispatch
  • Residential energy installers specifying supported control gateways

Device calculation

Hypothetical global planning range, 2025 scenario: assume 15,000,000–60,000,000 homes using managed rooftop solar or battery systems × 1–2 candidate OS endpoints per site/asset = 15,000,000–120,000,000 endpoints. Counting unit: home energy gateway computers; solar panels and battery cells excluded. Site and asset counts, and devices per site, are planning assumptions. The installed base has not been measured. Coverage is limited to the defined equipped subset; includes all candidate endpoints within that assumed subset. Hardware eligibility, certification, adoption and achievable NØNOS share are unverified; overlaps other cases.

How to interpret the figures

Adjacent or broader commercial market benchmark; not the NØNOS OS market, licensable-device count or revenue forecast.

Modelled candidate endpoints multiplied by an assumed annual USD price per endpoint. Pricing is a planning assumption, not a vendor quote. This illustrates the full scenario range, not revenue or total addressable market. It excludes adoption timing, procurement, certification, support costs, channel economics and achievable market share. Use cases can overlap, so their totals do not represent unique devices.
