Why this environment matters

Modern connected kettles and water dispensers depend on complex software, external data and remote administration. Here, the system heats or dispenses water according to local or remote commands. If trust is misplaced, unauthorised activation, altered temperature limits or weak cloud accounts can create scalding and energy risks. NØNOS could narrow the trusted computing base and give each function only the resources required for its defined job.

The security challenge

The threat model should assume that one component will eventually fail or be exploited. Consumer devices are exposed for years, share private household networks and often combine cloud services with cameras, microphones, motors, heaters or water valves. The aim is to prevent that single failure from automatically gaining the keys, devices, records and network paths of the whole platform.

How the capsule model could help

A candidate NØNOS architecture would keep remote scheduling and user apps separate from boil control, temperature sensing and dry-run protection. The design would prioritise minimal household data retention and per-device capabilities, supported by local-first processing and automatic clean-session reset. Each capsule would carry a declared policy for files, networks, devices and secrets, and unknown or altered software would not receive the same authority as an approved component.

Separate address spaces and capability checks can limit cross-process reach. They cannot stop harmful use of legitimate permissions, prove AI decisions correct or substitute for domain-specific safety controls.

Deployment requirements

Manufacturers would need to preserve offline operation, physical safety interlocks, accessible recovery and long-term update support. A secure OS cannot compensate for unsafe hardware, weak cloud accounts or poor product support.

Current public-beta limitations, hardware support and application availability must be assessed before any pilot. Neither this use case nor an industry source establishes NONOS certification or a current customer deployment.
