Why this environment matters

The platform for smart factory work-instruction terminals delivers current procedures, drawings and quality steps to operators on the production floor. The operational risk is specific: tampered instructions or stale revisions can create unsafe work, rework or nonconforming products. NØNOS could provide a smaller, memory-safe base for dividing that workflow into signed, least-privilege components and restoring it from a known state after each sensitive session or incident.

The security challenge

The threat model should assume that one component will eventually fail or be exploited. In this case, tampered instructions or stale revisions can create unsafe work, rework or nonconforming products. Industrial software turns files, sensor readings and network messages into machinery movement, production settings and safety-relevant decisions. Containment has to extend to devices and actuators. The aim is to prevent that single failure from automatically gaining the keys, devices, records and network paths of the whole platform.

How the capsule model could help

A candidate NØNOS architecture would use signed content capsules, role- and station-specific document access and automatic reset between operators. The design would prioritise restricted actuator access and attested maintenance sessions, supported by known-good recovery and driver and motion isolation. Each capsule would carry a declared policy for files, networks, devices and secrets, and unknown or altered software would not receive the same authority as an approved component.

Separate address spaces and capability checks can limit cross-process reach. They cannot stop harmful use of legitimate permissions, prove AI decisions correct or substitute for domain-specific safety controls.

Deployment requirements

Production deployment must maintain independent emergency stops, safety PLCs, certified interlocks and validated motion or process limits. NØNOS could reduce software trust but should not collapse independent safety layers.

Current public-beta limitations, hardware support and application availability must be assessed before any pilot. Neither this use case nor an industry source establishes NONOS certification or a current customer deployment.
